| Abstract Scope |
End-of-life (EOL) Nd-Fe-B magnets represent an important secondary source of critical rare earth elements. Direct recycling requires high quality powders suitable for reprocessing into new magnets while preserving magnetic microstructure. Conventional milling methods often cause non-selective fragmentation, excessive fines generation, and surface-damage. In this work, a selective boundary fracture milling approach was applied to hydrogen-decrepitated EOL Nd-Fe-B magnets. The process promotes preferential fracture along natural particle boundaries, enabling particle liberation with minimal damage. Scanning electron microscopy revealed particle separation with limited fragmentation. The processed powders were aligned, compacted, sintered, and annealed using conventional magnet manufacturing methods. Obtained magnets properties up to 22kOe coercivity, 14kG remanence, and 40MGOe (BH)max demonstrates the method’s viability for direct Nd-Fe-B magnet recycling. This work was supported by Ford Motors and performed at the Ames National Laboratory, operated for the U.S. DOE by Iowa State University of Science and Technology under Contract No. DE-AC02-07CH11358. |
