| Abstract Scope |
The use of 2D deformation maps from DIC and other imaging methods at different length-scales provides the opportunity for more reliable calibration and validation of models through inverse modelling techniques. However, inaccuracies in the imaging methodologies and model assumptions such as microstructure reconstruction, dimension and boundary conditions can introduce uncertainties in the estimated values of model parameters and subsequent prediction. In this talk, example problems at the macro and micro-scales will be discussed to demonstrate the above effects. At the macro-scale the prediction of residual stresses using DIC and FEM will be shown to understand the inaccuracies due to model assumptions and data limitation. Additionally, the influence of speckles on correlation accuracy will be shown using a virtual technique. At the micro-scale, a detailed analysis using milli-tensile experiments will be discussed to demonstrate the influence of microstructure reconstruction and 2D versus 3D modelling on predicted response and parameter estimation. |
