| Abstract Scope |
Friction stir processing (FSP) is evolving as one of the most effective effective fabrication route for light-weight metal matrix composites. However, its industry scale use is constrained by inherent heterogeneity of the reinforcement distribution in metallic matrix and typical cup shaped processed zone. This heterogeneity is due to nature of material flow, which dictate particle distribution, subdivision, and bead geometry. This work explores the conjoined use of tool offset and multi-pass, thereby analyzing flow dynamics by tracking the particle distribution. Addition of metallic reinforcement allows simultaneous evaluation of solid-state alloying. Study was performed through sequential micro-structural examinations of fabricated single, double, triple, and multi-pass composites. Corresponding findings pave the way towards more reliable and superior fuel-efficient automotive/aerospace/transportsation components.
