Abstract Scope |
We design austenitic TRIP steels with high strength and toughness for naval hull applications. By exploiting the relationships between processing, microstructure, property, and performance, we optimize alloying additions and heat treatments to enable precipitation strengthening and grain refinement while improving toughness. Using CALPHAD calculations, we predict phase stability and guide the design of the alloy composition. Tuning the stability of austenite to promote the TRIP effect, we apply an Orowan strengthening model for precipitation optimization and use Scheil calculations to ensure ferritic solidification with limited segregation. This integrated approach allows us to fine-tune the steel’s composition to achieve high strength and toughness to enhance the performance and durability of naval hulls in demanding environments. |
