Symposium Joining/Bonding of Dissimilar Materials
Presentation Title Fusion Welding of Dissimilar Ceramics and Ceramic-Metal Systems
Author(s) Jeremy L. Watts, Jecee Jarman
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Jeremy L. Watts
Abstract Scope Joining ceramics is often accomplished through the use of a braze or glassy phase. This however, necessarily results in the joint having different properties than the parent materials. By fusion welding ceramics, particularly ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs), the joint can maintain the same temperature capability, chemical resistance, radiation tolerance, etc. as the parent. In addition to joining like compositions, research at Missouri S&T has begun on the joining of dissimilar ceramics as well as ceramic metal systems. This talk will focus on zirconium diboride based compositions which have been welded to refractory alloys such as molybdenum and tungsten as well as other ceramic compositions. One of these ceramic-metal systems as well as a dissimilar ceramic joint have been demonstrated to function as thermocouples at temperatures exceeding 2000°C.
