Abstract Scope The aluminium industry’s customers increasingly demand higher recycling content and greater supply resilience whilst maintaining their need for lightweight solutions. This paper will focus on the corresponding challenges for alloy design in aerospace, automotive, and packaging applications, as well as strategies for reducing carbon footprint in production. Growing market opportunities in for example EV battery enclosures, additive manufacturing and high-performance alloys for space applications will be discussed. Finally, we will review some exciting new methods to accelerate product and process optimization and development that result from digitalization trends, predictive modelling, Industry 4.0, and AI-enabled data analysis methods.
