| Abstract Scope |
Long-duration space exploration missions alter human physiology and metabolic pathways, directly affecting how pharmaceuticals behave in the body. This abstract analyzes pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) under both stressors of microgravity and cosmic radiation. Because the extreme environmental pressures of deep space change the mechanisms of digestion and metabolism, normal Earth-based doses could fail. To fix this, I explore using smart, biocompatible materials to create drug delivery systems that utilize extended-release processes and protect from quality degradation from radiation exposure. By combining materials science with human biology, this research aims to find improved ways to prioritize astronaut health. Ultimately, understanding how medicines function and differ in space is crucial for safeguarding human health as we transition from low Earth orbit to long-term habitation on other planets and future deep-space destinations. |
