| Abstract Scope |
Aluminum-based alloys have been increasingly used in the automobile industry for their low-cost lightweight and high specific strength. With high-pressure die casting (HPDC), manufacturing large-size, complicated shape and non-heat-treatable thin-wall Al components (<3mm) is an emerging technology for bill of process efficiency. To explore the potential of recycled materials consumption, this work investigated the microstructure of as-cast HPDC Al7SiMgFeMn alloys with different Fe (0.15-0.90 wt.%) and Cu (0.02-0.5 wt.%) additions. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy were utilized to examine the microstructure. The results showed that higher Fe concentration promoted Fe-rich intermetallic compounds formation and changed morphology from compact to plate-like. Higher Cu additions induced Cu segregation to Al inter-dendritic regions and finer Al dendrite and eutectic network. Detailed microstructural characterization is underway and the influence of Fe and Cu additions on eutectic, dendrites and intermetallic compounds will be discussed to understand the solidification behavior and possible influence on mechanical properties. |
