| Abstract Scope |
In this study, we demonstrate that a laser powder bed fusion (LPBF)-fabricated Al-Fe-Zr alloy exhibits exceptional resistance to hydrogen embrittlement (HE). Following cathodic charging at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 for 3 days, the as-built alloy showed virtually no measurable HE susceptibility, while the aged condition experienced <10% reduction in ductility. High resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of several previously unreported intermetallic phases that formed during processing and heat treatment. These phases are hypothesized to play a critical role in mitigating hydrogen induced degradation through hydrogen trapping and microstructural stabilization mechanisms. Thermodynamic calculations performed using Thermo-Calc were used to evaluate the formation tendencies of secondary phases. However, the predicted phase equilibria could not fully explain the experimentally observed microstructures and HE behavior. The results highlight the unique microstructural features enabled by LPBF processing and suggest new opportunities for designing aluminum alloys with enhanced tolerance to hydrogen-rich environments. |
