Abstract Scope |
Compared to alpha/beta titanium alloys, the alpha microstructure in metastable beta titanium alloys can be more effectively tuned via different thermomechanical treatment. By manipulating these treatments, alpha precipitates of different sizes, morphologies and distributions can be achieved. In this presentation, we will introduce our recent study of grain boundary alpha precipitation and intragranular alpha precipitation in a metastable beta Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr (wt.%, Ti-5553) alloy. Our first study examines the morphology of grain boundary alpha precipitates in Ti-5553 utilizing 3D characterization and simulation. The morphology of grain boundary alpha precipitates in Ti-5553 was revealed using 3D FIB-SEM tomography, and its relationship with the inclination angle was studied via 3D phase field modeling. The second study focuses on the intragranular hierarchical alpha microstructure in Ti-5553. The role of high-index {10 9 3}<3 3 1> deformation twin and its substructure on the formation of hierarchical alpha microstructure will be introduced. |
