Abstract Scope |
Flash sintering is an advanced ceramic processing technique that rapidly densifies materials at significantly reduced temperatures and times through the simultaneous application of an electric field and heat. This study investigates the flash-sintering behaviour of high-entropy oxide (Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn)O in varying electric fields and current densities. The HEO specimens are sintered to greater than 95% density at a constant furnace temperature of 350 °C in 180 s. The effect of electric field and current density on the microstructural evolution and electrical properties of the sintered samples is evaluated. Fine-structure studies and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are carried out to get insight into the local structure and oxidation state of the elements in flash-sintered HEOs. This study highlights that the applied DC field, and consequently the electrochemical reaction, affect the densification and electrical properties of the processed specimens. |
