| Abstract Scope |
Electrochemical hydrogen charging is widely used to evaluate hydrogen embrittlement (HE), yet the influence of charging-induced corrosion on HE assessment and hydrogen quantification remains unclear. In this work, AA7075 was hydrogen charged in conventional NaCl based and glycerol based electrolytes. The NaCl based electrolyte caused severe corrosion, surface roughening, resulting in a corrosion rate approximately 28 times higher than that in the glycerol based electrolyte. In contrast, the glycerol based electrolyte largely preserved the original surface while maintaining effective hydrogen charging. Although both electrolytes successfully introduced hydrogen, NaCl charged specimens exhibited more severe mechanical degradation and pit-associated cracking. Moreover, corrosion products formed during NaCl based charging significantly overestimated the measured hydrogen content. These results demonstrate that NaCl based charging should be regarded as a simultaneous hydrogen charging and corrosion process. The glycerol based electrolyte provides a more reliable approach for evaluating the intrinsic HE susceptibility of aluminum alloys. |
