| Abstract Scope |
Laboratory-scale simulations of weld heat affected zones (HAZs) enable investigation of metallurgical causes of HAZ properties, especially in the coarse grain HAZ (CGHAZ), over a greater range of alloying and thermal profiles than would be efficient or economically reasonable in real weld applications. In this study, dilatometry CGHAZ laboratory simulations were conducted on experimental V microalloyed steels to determine V alloying effects on microstructural evolution and resulting mechanical properties. Increasing prior-austenite grain size from the suppression of AlN formation in favor of V(C,N) precipitates was observed with increasing alloy V content, which was supported by thermodynamic calculation. Hardenability effects from increased soluble V content and V(C,N) precipitate evolution were associated with the formation of different ferritic microconstituents as a function of cooling rate, which also affected microhardness. Advanced characterization utilizing electron backscatter diffraction techniques differentiated between bainitic microconstituents in mixed microstructures to further elucidate the effects of microconstituents on hardness. |
