Abstract Scope |
Processing of metal matrix composites (MMCs) via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) offers significant advantages over traditional methods. Typically, the LPBF process utilizes 15–45 µm powder with 30–60 µm layer thickness. In this study, a specialized LPBF setup employing a smaller laser spot size is used to process 5–25 µm metal powder, pre-mixed with nano-sized ceramic powder. The influence of reduced powder and laser spot sizes on ceramic particle distribution, microstructure characteristics, and part properties is evaluated and compared with standard LPBF. Preliminary results suggest that the specialized setup could potentially enhance particle dispersion and enable the production of superior mechanical properties parts due to microstructural refinement. In addition, combining the specialized LPBF setup with MMC unlocks the ability to produce high-strength components with higher resolution and finer features, advancing high-performance MMC development for applications where parts with high dimensional accuracy, lightweight, and high strength are critical. |
