| Abstract Scope |
Refractory alloys are attractive for aerospace and nuclear applications requiring strength at elevated temperatures, but their high melting points and reactivity pose persistent challenges for both powder production and additive manufacturing. Cold spray additive manufacturing (CSAM) avoids melting altogether, making it well-suited to refractory systems, yet feedstock quality remains a bottleneck for realizing consistent, high-performance deposits. Ultrasonic atomization (UA) addresses this by producing pre-alloyed, spherical NbTi powders with fine, rapidly solidified microstructures. This work investigates CSAM of ultrasonically atomized NbTi powders across a range of compositions (50/50, 80/20, 90/10, and 95/5 at.% Nb:Ti) to establish baseline powder characteristics and deposit quality as a function of composition. Select compositions will be examined further to assess how UA process parameters influence as-atomized powder microstructure and the degree to which that microstructure is preserved through cold spray consolidation, providing insight into process-structure relationships for this feedstock route. |
