| Abstract Scope |
The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) limits fuel cells and metal–air batteries, and platinum catalysts are too expensive for large-scale use. Here, a low-cost composite of partially etched (PE) Ti3C2 MXene and nitrogen-doped graphene (N-G) was prepared by simple sonication and studied by XRD, Raman, SEM, and EDX. ORR activity was measured on a rotating disk electrode in O2-saturated 0.1 M KOH. The best composite (PE-MXene/N-G 75/25) reached 4.75 mA/cm2 at 1600 rpm, about 1.9 times pure PE-MXene and close to the diffusion-limited current of commercial Pt/C with a Tafel slope of 98 mV/dec. After 3,000 potential cycles, the composite retained 88% of its current versus 72% for pure PE-MXene, showing N-G also protects the MXene from oxidation. These results demonstrate a simple, scalable route to active and durable non-precious ORR electrocatalysts for fuel cells and metal–air batteries. |
