| Abstract Scope |
Understanding the deformation behavior of structural materials under thermomechanical cycling is critical for many high-temperature applications. In this study, in situ neutron diffraction was used to probe the micromechanical deformation behavior of a 316 austenitic stainless steel subjected to coupled thermal cycling between 150 and 500 °C and mechanical cycling between −250 and 150 MPa. After decoupling the contribution of thermal expansion, grain-orientation-dependent mechanical responses were revealed, showing behavior distinct from that observed during mechanical cycling at constant temperatures. The underlying deformation mechanisms are discussed based on the evolution of dislocation density and dislocation character. |
