| Abstract Scope |
Indian steel re-rolling mills form a major part of the secondary steel sector, but their carbon, energy, and water footprints remain poorly quantified at individual steel plant and their cluster levels. Limits evidence-based decarbonization planning for small and medium rolling mills, particularly where reheating furnaces depend on coal, furnace oil, or mixed fuels. This study develops a life cycle assessment framework for environmental footprints of Indian steel re-rolling mills and evaluate technically feasible intervention scenarios for environmental footprint reduction. The analysis quantifies baseline impacts from billet reheating, rolling operations, electricity use, fuel combustion, water use, and upstream energy supply. Intervention scenarios include fuel switching to Piped Natural Gas or natural gas, furnace efficiency improvement, waste heat recovery, renewable electricity integration, and process optimization. Results are expected to identify dominant emission hotspots and estimate reduction potential across alternative pathways. Study provides LCA-based approach to support targeted decarbonization of Indian rolling mills. |
