| Abstract Scope |
Laser Directed Energy Deposition (LDED) of NdFeB magnets enables the fabrication of complex permanent magnets for electric motors, yet stable bulk production remains challenging due to complex parameter interactions. This work establishes a systematic process-geometry optimization strategy for LDED processed NdFeB by correlating processing parameters, single-track geometry, and bulk stability. An initial screening of 160 single tracks identified powder feed rate as the dominant factor controlling track geometry. A two-step optimization workflow utilizing specific energy, geometric stability, and melt pool dilution refined the parameter space into a stable processing window. Fabricated bulk samples achieved dimensionally stable morphology and relative densities exceeding 99% (up to 99.54%). However, LDED process suppress the hard magnetic Nd2Fe14B phase, promoting soft magnetic α-Fe and Nd2Fe17Bx phases. Consequently, intrinsic coercivity was limited to 34.8-40.1 kA/m, indicating that post-process thermal or metallurgical control remains critical. |
