| Abstract Scope |
It is estimated that 25 million tons of iron were loss to the slag produced in the electric arc furnace (EAF) in 2024. Therefore, sustainable iron recovery from EAF slags would enhance the circularity of the steel industry. This study proposes the experimental framework for the design of hydrogen-induced reduction and foaming of industrial EAF slag. In order to design adequate reduction heat treatments, thermodynamic equilibrium calculations by FactSage 8.4 were combined with phenomenological models to predict the viscosity and foaming index of the slags under a variety of hydrogen injection flow rates. Experimental validation was carried out using an innovative laboratory-scale melting furnace at 1600ºC, equipped with a mini-lance to bubble hydrogen-based gas mixtures into the molten slag and a micro-gas chromatograph for the off-gas semi-continuous analyses. These results enable the identification of experimentally optimal working ranges under hydrogen injection for the development of new, sustainable metallurgical processes. |
