| Abstract Scope |
The nuclear renaissance in the 2000s marked the launch of major research and development activities on Gen IV reactors (e.g., MSR, LFR, HTGR) capable of operating at temperatures and doses higher than LWRs. Central to this effort was the designation of Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at INL as a National (renamed Nuclear) Scientific User Facility (NSUF) to test high priority structural materials and fuels for these advanced reactors. The first project at ATR-NSUF was the University of Wisconsin Pilot Project conducted in collaboration with INL and involved ATR irradiation of over five hundred 3mm TEM disks and miniature tensile specimens of over twenty high priority structural materials. The procedures and protocols developed during this project and its ensuing success have paved the way for the establishment of NSUFs in universities and national laboratories across the US and have had a profound positive impact on the landscape of nuclear materials research. |
