| Abstract Scope |
The aggressive nature of impure molten halide salts means structural materials need to be selectively chosen and/or modified to limit the dissolution of the more reactive alloying elements, such as chromium. Deposited protective films offer a solution to the problem in select cases. In the present work, nickel films (resistant to corrosion) on 304L stainless steel were exposed to a eutectic chloride salt mixture at 450 °C and 750 °C with an argon cover gas containing a known amount of oxygen acting as the controlled impurity. The perfected coating generally resisted corrosion and provides a viable solution for molten halide salt corrosion. If there are imperfections, such as scratches, the presence of a galvanic effect at lower temperatures and increased dissolution at higher temperature leads to a decrease in corrosion protection of the coating, as is shown through cross sectional analysis of a scratched Ni-coated, 304L stainless steel sample. |
