| Abstract Scope |
Literature on 6xxx series aluminum alloys has shown that plastic deformation can impact subsequent aging behavior. However, prior work focused on modeling industrial tension leveling studied the effects of applied strain on precipitation when strain was applied before natural aging (NA). To account for the impact of stamping, this study focuses on the effect of straining when performed after NA and before subsequent aging at 180°C (paint bake process). Hardness testing supported by differential scanning calorimetry analysis performed on aged samples provide evidence of changes in precipitation with increased applied strain. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography reveal different precipitate structures and density with strain. A greater understanding of how thermo-mechanical processing changes precipitation behavior is of interest in improving properties of existing alloys and in providing insight into designing processes for new alloys. |
