Abstract Scope Tungsten carbide (WC)-based cemented carbides with a ductile cobalt (Co) binder are widely used in cutting tools due to their excellent wear resistance and high-temperature performance. However, the formation of undesirable eta (η) phases, including W₃Co₃C (M₆C) and W₆Co₆C (M₁₂C), remains a critical challenge during LPBF process, as these phases reduce cutting tool performance. This study investigates the effect of laser powder bed fusion process parameters on η-phase formation in WC-Co cemented carbides and its influence on wear behavior. Linear reciprocating and ball-on-disc wear tests are performed using a tribometer to evaluate the material response under two distinct sliding conditions. Fracture toughness (Kc) is estimated from scratch-induced damage parameters, including lateral force, groove perimeter, and load-bearing contact area. Furthermore, microstructural characterization techniques are employed to elucidate the η-phase formation mechanism. These findings provide valuable insight into tailoring the microstructure and optimizing the fabrication of WC-Co cemented carbides for improved performance.
