| Abstract Scope |
This overview summarizes the progress made in ultrasonic processing of aluminum alloys over the last 10 year. Specific mechanisms of cavitation-driven nucleation, fragmentation, deagglomeration and atomization were revealed through a combination of in-situ observations and acoustic measurements. These mechanisms operate upon ultrasonic melt processing above and across the liquidus of an alloy and are relevant for structure refinement, composite and additive manufacturing. Advanced modelling was used to simulate cavitation and acoustic flow patterns at different acoustic intensities and in different industrial settings including direct-chill casting. These mechanisms were then practically implemented in structure refinement of aluminum alloys upon shape and direct-chill casting, demonstrating efficient refinement of grains and primary intermetallics, suppression of columnar grain growth in billets, and improved efficiency of AlTiB additions. The outstanding challenges and further research directions are discussed. |
