| Abstract Scope |
In-situ observation of tribological phenomena is challenging due to the limited accessibility and rapid evolution of contact interfaces. Leveraging high-speed, high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction in transmission mode, we characterize sliding interfaces in real time to capture microstructural evolution, including phase transformations, grain refinement, residual strain, and dislocation density changes preceding and during scuffing. Time-resolved dislocation density measurements in body-centered tetragonal martensite are obtained via Convolutional Multiple Whole Profile fitting and validated with independent line-profile analysis. Cross-correlation of dislocation density with the coefficient of friction reveals that microstructural and friction signals evolve together at sub-second timescales. To streamline diffraction data processing, we developed PRISMA, an open-source application enabling parallelized, scalable analysis with user-friendly interfaces and high-performance computing compatibility. These advances provide mechanistic insights into tribological failure and support progress toward a predictive, physics-based theory of scuffing. |
