| Abstract Scope |
Biochar has emerged as a promising material for cementitious composites due to its carbon sequestration potential and the valorization of agroforestry residues. This study evaluated the influence of biochars produced from coconut shell, bamboo, bean residues, sugarcane, corn cob, and eucalyptus on the physical and mechanical properties of rendering mortars. The biochars were characterized in terms of pozzolanic activity, particle size distribution, and mineralogical composition and incorporated at 5% by cement mass. Although all biochars were classified as non-pozzolanic, the biomass feedstock significantly influenced mortar performance. Eucalyptus- and bamboo-derived biochars exhibited the highest mechanical strengths after 28 days, which was associated with their finer particle size, improved particle packing, and greater predominance of amorphous phases, enhancing their interaction with the cementitious matrix. These findings demonstrate that the physical and mineralogical characteristics of biochars strongly influence mechanical performance and highlight their potential as sustainable materials for construction applications. |
