Abstract Scope |
Optical sensor technologies such as fiber optic sensors show great promise for a wide range of applications due to their unique characteristics which include compatibility with harsh environment applications, resistance to electromagnetic interference, enhanced safety as compared to electronic sensors in medium voltage and flammable environments, and capability for distributed interrogation. Integration of advanced functional materials with photonic sensing platforms can optimize the capability for a wide range of applications spanning energy and defense use cases. The presentation will overview recent advances in functional material enabled sensing for several examples of important applications including electric power grid assets, pipelines, carbon sequestration, and hydrogen infrastructure amongst others. Example systems investigated and integrated with the optical sensing platforms to be discussed include magneto-optical, mixed matrix membrane, quantum, and plasmonic materials and composites. Applications to electromagnetic field, chemical, thermal, and multiparameter sensing modalities will be discussed and highlighted in high-value use cases. |
