Abstract Scope |
Banana crops generate a considerable number of lignocellulose-rich residues. One strategy for managing these residues is to use additive manufacturing technologies, which can increase their aggregate value. In this study, a fused filament fabrication (FFF) printer was modified for 3D printing continuous banana fiber yarns (CBFY) in a polylactic acid (PLA) matrix. For this purpose, a new 3D print head with in-situ impregnation was developed to process the printed parts. The CBFY were treated with mercerization and a polymer coating. The most relevant problems related to depositing the printing material made from CBFY and the PLA matrix were discussed. Additionally, tensile and flexural testing were used to evaluate the mechanical properties of the parts. The properties of the printed parts were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). |
