| Abstract Scope |
Mechanical anisotropy in additively manufactured titanium alloys arises from rapid thermal cycling along the build direction, which promotes columnar grain growth. This study investigates how alloying elements affect the thermodynamics of solidification to disrupt columnar grain growth in beta titanium alloys. CALPHAD-based modeling was employed to evaluate changes in phase stability, solidification range, and volumetric Gibbs free energy across the liquid-to-solid transition induced by each alloying condition. Results show that the effect of elements on the solidification range is the dominant factor governing the driving force for nucleation, with variation in addition level producing a secondary, less pronounced effect. These findings establish a framework for predicting how alloying additions refine the grain structure, supporting alloy design strategies to achieve more uniform microstructures and improved mechanical performance in additively manufactured titanium alloys. |
