Abstract Scope |
Materials under the extreme conditions of fission or fusion nuclear reactors will be subject to combined irradiation, thermal, and mechanical stresses. Probing the impact of these environments requires a combined understanding of fundamental deformation processes and how those processes lead to macroscopic failure. This work examines the impacts of irradiation on the mechanical behavior of advanced steels and metal hydrides for nuclear applications. We show the effect of nanoscale ion irradiation-induced voids on failure in yttrium hydride with nano-pillar compression combined with finite element modelling, in comparison to micro and bulk pillar compression. We also show the effects of specimen thickness on determining the fatigue properties of ion irradiated Alloy 709 (an advanced nuclear steel), and variation between in-situ and ex-situ testing. This work also explores the intricacies associated with attempting to link properties and performance across orders of magnitude of length. |
