| Abstract Scope |
Grain boundary chemistry, altered through segregation of solute atoms, can have a profound impact on the properties of polycrystals. Understating how solute distributes within a grain boundary network, however, is a complex and multifaced problem, owing to the multitude of length scales present. To elucidate the role of different length scales, we employ side-by-side atom probe tomography and atomistic simulations on a binary nickel alloy. Analyzing multiple grain boundaries of significant interfacial area, we observe substantial inhomogeneity within a boundary, compared to that measured between boundaries. These inhomogeneities are discussed in light of a site-wise spectral model. With an understanding of the observed compositional inhomogeneity, we establish guidelines for measuring the average composition of a single boundary, as well as extracting the polycrystalline-average grain boundary chemistry. Finally, the capability to extract site-wise segregation energies from experiments is discussed. |
