| Abstract Scope |
Thermal transport in crystalline solids is strongly influenced not only by crystallographic long-range order but also by local structural features. In particular, locally distorted coordination environments can significantly suppress lattice thermal conductivity. This talk focuses mainly on mixed-anion materials with distorted heteroleptic coordination, where different types of anions are asymmetrically arranged around cations. The degree of distortion of coordination polyhedra is quantified using a distortion index that simultaneously captures the variation in bond strengths. Structures exhibiting high distortion index also contain markedly off-centered atoms with rattling-like behavior. We will discuss how such features in local structure and chemical bonding affect phonon transport properties, and design strategies for materials with intrinsically low thermal conductivity, which are promising for thermoelectric applications. |
