| Abstract Scope |
Plate-shaped precipitates of the Ω and T1 phases, which form on {111} planes of the aluminiummatrix, are the principal strengthening features in Al–Cu–Mg–Ag and Al–Cu–Li–Mg–Agalloys. Although it is well established that dilute additions of Ag and Mg are essential forachieving a fine and uniform distribution of these plates, their precise roles remain debated, largely due to the difficulty of mapping their distributions using conventional techniques. Byemploying atomic-resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electronmicroscopy (STEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX-STEM), we revealdistinct partitioning behaviours. Ag and Mg are predominantly located on the broad surfaces of Ω plates. In contrast, Ag partitions to the broad surfaces of T1 plates, while Mg is distributedboth at the T1/α-Al interface and within the plate interior. These observations provide criticalatomic-scale insight and are further interpreted using density functional theory calculations. |
