| Abstract Scope |
Next-generation molten-salt reactors (MSRs) promise higher thermal efficiency, online refueling, and near-elimination of meltdown and hydrogen-generation hazards, however their reliability still hinges on structural materials that must survive corrosive molten salt environments. Impurities such as oxygen, moisture, and dissolved metal ions can shift molten-salt chemistry and potentially accelerate corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking in MSR structural alloys. Here, an integrated approach incorporates corrosion coupons, u-bend specimens, and in-situ direct-current potential-drop (DCPD) measurements of compact tension specimens exposed to molten FLiNaK and impurity-controlled salts. The u-bends provide a platform for detecting crack initiation, the DCPD-instrumented compact-tension samples yield crack-growth rates, and the coupons capture uniform and localized attack as functions of contaminants. The resulting dataset forms the basis of a monitoring toolkit that will help to accelerate development and qualification of MSR structural alloys.
