Abstract Scope |
Establishing a diverse supply chain for rare earth element (REE) extraction and beneficiation remains a significant challenge that requires disruptive new approaches. We propose a solvent-free pyrometallurgical treatment to circumvent the hydrometallurgical treatments that generate vast amounts of toxic liquid waste today. Using laser heating and in situ XRD, we observe rapid thermal decomposition of carbonatite ores in seconds to form primarily oxides. Ex situ XRF elemental mapping of the samples after longer (minutes) processing at extreme temperatures (>2000˚C) shows that the rare earth oxides separate from the gangue materials via settlement, volatilization of gangue materials, and an opportunity for controlled separation of radionuclides via additives. Our results indicate the feasibility and opportunities for solvent-free REE beneficiation by pyrometallurgy. |
