| Abstract Scope |
Geopolymers are alkali aluminosilicate materials containing abundant alkali and alkaline-earth cations hosted within an interconnected [SiO4] and [AlO4]− framework. During the initial stage of geopolymerization, the formation of the aluminosilicate network creates void spaces that can accommodate chemical and mineral species through co-precipitation processes. This characteristic underpins the use of geopolymers for heavy-metal immobilisation, radioactive-element encapsulation, and CO2 sequestration.
In carbon sequestration applications, CO2 is mineralised within geopolymer slurries in the presence of Ca2+ and/or Mg2+, forming stable carbonate minerals for permanent carbon storage. However, the interactions between these carbonate minerals and the host geopolymer framework remain poorly understood. This study investigates the coordination environments of Si, Al, and incorporated mineral phases using soft X-ray spectroscopy (NEXAFS) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results will provide molecular-scale insights into carbonation-induced structural modifications and their implications for the long-term durability and stability of carbon-mineralised geopolymers. |
