Abstract Scope |
Buckling-driven instability is a key limitation in the mechanical performance of plate-based lattice structures under compression. This study presents a modified body-centred cubic (BCC) lattice design that incorporates sinusoidal geometry into plate elements to mitigate premature buckling and enhance structural resilience. Quasi-static and drop weight impact tests are performed on material-extruded samples to evaluate energy absorption and failure progression. Compared to conventional flat plate lattices, the sinusoidal design exhibits reduced stress fluctuations and less catastrophic buckling, with a trade-off in lower yield stress. Differences between the geometries become increasingly pronounced under dynamic loading, revealing distinct strain rate sensitivities. By improving deformation stability, the proposed design offers a promising strategy for enhancing crashworthiness in additively manufactured lattice structures. |
