Refractory alloys are sensitive to thermal gradients, leading to residual stresses and crack formation during processing. While studies have shown that FCC alloys accommodate thermal strains through the formation of stacking faults and nanotwins, little is known about how intermetallic phases respond. Using Nb-V-Zr refractory alloy as an exploratory material, this work employs STEM and complementary techniques to investigate how defect formation accommodates thermal strains in C14/C15 Laves phases. HAADF-STEM imaging showed internal interfaces in the form of sub-grain boundaries along with defects like stacking faults and twinning within the Laves phases. Extending this analysis, 4D-STEM was used to reconstruct virtual images and locally map strain, enabling direct correlation between planar defects and their surrounding strain fields. These findings provide new insight into thermal strain accommodation in C14/C15 Laves phases through defect formation and demonstrate the potential of 4D-STEM for studying deformation mechanisms in complex intermetallic phases. |
