| Abstract Scope |
Early career materials science engineers are often asked to lead the selection of raw materials for engineering teams within advanced manufacturing companies. However, many of these early career engineers entering the workforce have either received little training raw material supply chains or struggle to put that knowledge into practice. Understanding the market drivers for raw materials, can be just as vital to new engineers as slip systems. Using our experience and observations, this talk highlights supply chain knowledge that materials engineering programs should consider incorporating into their curriculum. We suggest that all students be able to convey what material supply chains are, call out common supply chain challenges, identify sourcing locations and manufacturing processes that impact downstream performance, and discuss overlaps and standards that impact sourcing opportunities. To help illustrate the importance of supply chain, we will highlight case study of alloys used in the welding industry. |
