| Abstract Scope |
This research focused on assembling bactericidal lithia borate glass and various types of polymers into composites and testing the resulting bactericidal and dissolution properties. The materials studied were Loctite Epoxy, Loctite Clear Silicone, UV Resin, and lithia borate glasses of stoichiometry xLi2O•(1-x)B2O3, with x values of x=0.17 and 0.41. A bacterial assay was completed using E.Coli and Tryptic Soy Broth. The suggested bactericidal mechanism of glass reacting with water was proven, as the glasses studied dissolved which resulted in a surface pH change. The dissolution mechanics and pH change can largely be attributed to the glass structure, where the basic glass (x=0.41) dissolved faster than the acidic glass (x=0.17). Acidic composites had a positive correlation between the glass loading (mass percent glass) and the bactericidal properties. At glass loading 60-72 acidic composites were as bactericidal as basic composites at 38-48 glass loading, measuring around 3 CFU per mL. |
