| Abstract Scope |
Electronic perturbations produced when ions pass through an insulator unfold over a wide range of time and length scales, from the initial deposition of ion energy into the electronic and atomic structures, to the thermalization and transfer of energy from the hot electron-hole plasma to atoms, to the thermal diffusion and recombination of cool charged and neutral carriers. In-situ cryo-ionoluminescence (cryo-IL) using light and heavy ions is a valuable tool for gaining insights into ultrafast electronic dynamics within the highly excited region around the ion path. This talk presents an overview of worked performed over the past 10 years at the Ion Beam Materials Laboratory at the University of Tennessee, which has advanced the use of cryo-IL to gain deeper insights into electronic excitation, energy transfer processes, and carrier transport phenomena in ion irradiated silica, complex oxides, III-V semiconductors, and diamond. |
