| Abstract Scope |
In the last decades, atom probe tomography (APT) has become a key technique for studying the chemical structure of materials down to the subnanometre scale with a mass sensitivity in the range of tens ppm. In contrast to other analytical methods, APT has the same detection sensitivity for all atoms across the whole periodic table.
Currently, the development of Mg alloys is primarily focused on increasing their strength, corrosion resistance, and formability for use in lightweight applications. However, microstructure plays a decisive role, as it determines the properties of the alloys. Therefore, a better understanding of the microstructure at the smallest level is necessary, and APT provides the perfect opportunity, combining high spatial and chemical sensitivity at the near-atomic scale.
This talk will highlight the advantages of APT for the development/design of new Mg-based alloys, as well as its potential to improve our fundamental understanding of magnesium corrosion. |
