| Abstract Scope |
Electrorefining of aluminium is a possible route for recycling the most heavily contaminated aluminium scrap. The technique resembles the Hoopes process for production of high-purity aluminium, however, the aim is to upcycle the scrap metal to aluminium with similar quality as Hall-Héroult primary metal. A side-by-side electrode setup was applied, contrary to the Hoopes process which is a three-layer electrolysis, with the purpose of being less dependent on density of the electrolyte. In the following work, a small scale (hours) and a larger scale (days) electrorefining experiment cell has been conducted. Effects of the current density, electrode areas and anode-cathode distance of the upscaling of the electrorefining process was modelled using OpenFOAM. The experiments confirmed the viability of the process for cleaning heavily contaminated scrap. |
