Building workflows to predict the anisotropic plastic behavior of materials based on crystal plasticity (cp-) requires the simulation method to be tested against experimental data, which counts as validation provided good enough agreement is obtained. Earlier work comparing grain reorientation under plastic deformation with viscoplastic cp-FFT simulation showed good statistical agreement but substantial variance at the individual grain scale. An x-ray microscopy dataset for Ti-7Al was used to instantiate a cp-FFT simulation and compare against in subsequent strain steps: this showed good agreement within the elastic range. In a similar comparison for the Air Force Simulation Challenge for printed nickel 625, the elastic tensor values showed excellent agreement under elastic loading but widening disagreement for the plastic part. These results, calibration vs validation, and other issues are discussed along with suggestions for future research. |
