| Abstract Scope |
Additive manufacturing (AM) of magnesium alloys is revolutionary for lightweight aerospace components; however, it requires controlled processing to mitigate porosity. This work applies an AM screening framework that accelerates Mg alloy development to months. Directed energy deposition (DED) screens compositions and defines a viable processing window. A Mg-Y-Al-Zn-Zr (MRL 250TM) alloy was selected, and its composition and processing conditions were transferred to laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) using a reduced order energy balance. Mechanical testing of the LPBF revealed a previously unreported strength-ductility combination for an AM Mg alloy of 261 MPa yield strength, 376 MPa ultimate tensile strength, 7 % ductility, and a specific strength of 204 kNm/kg in the as-built state. The properties are attributed to well dispersed, pre precipitated, faceted Al2Y C15 Laves phase particles approximately 50-200 nm in size. This work demonstrates how high-throughput processing-structure-property relationships established in DED can accelerate alloy development in LPBF. |
