Abstract Scope |
Small scale mechanical testing has become an intrinsic part of the materials characterization toolbox, especially for understanding the properties at specific sites or of small volumes of material. One of the major applications of micromechanical testing is in understanding the properties of ultra-fine-grained metals and alloys, where the small grain size allows the measurements to be directly comparable to bulk material properties due to the dominance of the grain size effect over sample size effect. Here, the testing of ultra-fine grained (grain size ~1 µm) Ni and irradiated W will be described with a discussion of the comparability of the results with bulk mechanical properties. |
