| Abstract Scope |
Lead is widely added to brass alloys to improve machinability; however, excessive lead contents create serious environmental and health concerns. In this study, brass components used in the maritime industry were found to contain up to 25 wt.% Pb. To recycle these high-lead brass wastes, a chloride-assisted pyrometallurgical lead removal method was investigated. The process is based on the reaction between dissolved Pb in the alloy and added metal chlorides, forming PbCl₂ that separates from the alloy while the metallic component of the chloride salt is incorporated into the alloy matrix. Various chloride salts were thermodynamically evaluated, and CuCl₂ was identified as the most suitable reagent. Experimental studies were conducted using different CuCl₂ addition ratios and heating procedures. SEM-EDS analyses showed that the Pb content of the alloy could be reduced to approximately 4 wt.%, demonstrating the potential of the proposed method for sustainable recycling of high-lead brass wastes. |
