| Abstract Scope |
Over the past few years, we have commissioned a neutron imaging and tomography beamline at the MIT Reactor to support materials research, particularly for applications in nuclear energy. Neutron imaging is analogous to X-ray imaging but provides unique sensitivity to light elements such as hydrogen and lithium, enabling insights not feasible with other techniques. The beamline operates with a thermal spectrum and supports both imaging and tomography capabilities, with a flexible setup for in-situ experiments. To demonstrate the utility of the facility, we present two application areas: (1) characterization of irradiated fuel salt (so far, at room temperature), and (2) investigation of hydrogen retention in irradiated Yttrium and Zirconium Hydrides for use as advanced moderators in compact nuclear reactors. |
