The dissimilar welding of steel pipelines with inner claddings of Ni-based alloys still represents a challenge to the oil and gas industry, especially regarding overmatching the yield strength of high grade API steel pipes such as X65, X70, and X80. The present study proposes a welding procedure using two filler metals: Alloy 686 for the root pass region to guarantee corrosion resistance, and a low-alloy steel (AWS ER100S-G) for the filling passes, aiming to provide the required yield strength. The dissimilar joint was welded by GMAW-P (Pulsed Gas Metal Arc Welding) on a robotic workbench. The welded joint did not exhibit any solidification cracks, even in the high-dilution welding passes between the low-alloy steel and the Ni-based alloy. The high dilution induced the formation of a hard martensitic matrix with retained-austenite and TiC. Transverse all-weld tensile tests revealed a yield strength sufficient to overmatch API 5L X65, X70, and X80 steels. |
